Learn more about Benfotiamine
What is it? Benfotiamine is a lipid-soluble, highly bioavailable form of thiamine that is safer and much more effective than other common water-soluble thiamine precursors in producing sustained levels of active thiamine (thiamine pyrophosphate, or TPP) in the tissues and cells. Though benfotiamine is lipid-soluble, it does not accumulate in the body, but is quickly converted into TPP and metabolized normally with a half-life of 8-12 hours.
What does it do? TPP is itself a potent anti-oxidant and also stimulates the co-enzyme transketolase inside the cells. This activity is demonstrated to block the three major damage pathways of Advanced Glycation End-products inside the cells.
What is the therapeutic effect? Benfotiamine’s sole effect is to safely establish durable levels of active thiamine in the body and cells. Numerous double-blind, placebo controlled, clinical trials have demonstrated that the durable levels of active thiamine produced by benfotiamine have a positive therapeutic effect on neuropathies of all types with no adverse side effects (https://www.benfotiamine.org/articles.htm). The evidence from these trials is augmented by extensive anecdotal accounts from everyday benfotiamine users who have otherwise not been able to find relief from the symptoms of neuropathy.
What is a typical dosage? Most users get excellent results at 600 mg/day (two capsules twice per day), with some responding better at 900 mg or 1200 mg per day. Typical maintenance dosages after an initial 8-week regimen range from 300 – 600 mg per day.
